Freeze Out: Usually in January or February – experience winter camping. Past activities included ice fishing, snow-shoe hikes, model rockets on a frozen lake, build an snow shelter and sleep in it one night.
Hudson Riverside Rod & Gun Club: Shoot.22 rifles on a target range, skeet shooting (shotguns) for the older scouts, archery, and practice fishing in the well stocked pond. Traditionally younger scouts have had opportunities to learn to safely build fires and handle pocket knives; older scouts have learned how to properly use axes, bow-saws, and manage an “axe-yard” to BSA safety standards.
Scout-Orienteering:
Compete in small teams against other scouts in a timed map skills course in the woods.
Newfound Lake Canoe Trip: This pristine lake is about two and a half miles wide and seven miles in length. Load up the canoe and paddle over an island to campout on.
Ski Trip: Spring skiing (usually March) at Gunstock, Sunday River or Shawnee Peak, while sleeping in a beautiful old scout lodge with massive full-service kitchen, dining, and community area.
Mountain Hikes: Pitch the tents for a good night’s sleep, followed by a scenic and healthy hike up one of many of New England’s mountains. Patrols (6 scouts) work together to cook and eat their own delicious meals from the menu they’ve planned themselves. Pleasantly exhausted, relax by the campfire under the brilliant star-lit sky far from the light-pollution of city lights. Favorite past hikes included Mount Cardigan, Mount Monadnock, Mount Everest (just kidding), and Mount Greylock
Cape Cod Bike Trip: Past trips have been to Yarmouth, Bourne, and Nantucket. Activities include biking, fishing, and potential for swimming at the lake at the camp (need adults with safe swim certification).
White Water Rafting: Tent camping at a camp-ground combined with the fun of donning a wet-suit and life-vest for a healthy and exciting white-water raft trip. See if you can keep your raft from getting stuck in the “lemon squeezer” and hang on tight to shoot the rapids.
Summer Camp: Summer Camp at Camp Resolute is another critical element in Troop 41 activities. Usually held the last week of July. All Scouts are strongly encouraged to attend summer camp for the benefits in training (scout skills and merit badges). Summer camp is fun with a purpose, where scouts gain memories that last a lifetime and have fun while doing activities that help them advance in rank.
