Participation Requirements

Troop 41 is committed to providing opportunities for all boys to advance through the scout ranks. The best way to get requirements completed is to attend as many meetings and camping events as possible. Each level of advancement requires the scout to “show scout spirit” and be an active member which Troop 41 defines as follows:

      • Demonstrating appropriate behavior
      • Attends at least 75% of all troop meetings
      • Participate in at least 55% of all troop outings

Rank Requirements

Rank advancement is one difference between Boy Scouts and “camping club” organizations. Ranks above 1st Class include a requirement to serve in a leadership position

      • Sign off of requirements must be done by an authorized signer (Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and in some cases Instructors). Parents are not allowed to sign off for their own son regardless of his/her position.
      • Rank advancement requires the scout to “show scout spirit” and be an active member of the troop, which includes meeting general participation requirements outlined above.
      • Some of the youth leadership positions (SPL, ASPL and Patrol Leader) require 75% participation at troop outings. For example, serving as a patrol leader involves leading a patrol during camp outs; if few camp outs are attended, the patrol leadership role has not been completely fulfilled.
      • The troop scribe position requires high participation. If he cannot attend, the scribe must ensure coverage at all meetings and PLC meetings by delegating the scribe duties to another scout who will be attending.
      • Each youth leadership position will have a written job description that spells out the responsibilities to be used as the guideline for earning leadership credit.
      • Terms leadership positions are normally 6 months, which may be longer than the published requirement for rank advancement.
      • The Scout Handbook (every Troop 41 scout has one) details the requirements for each rank, or you can find generally up-to-date information at usscouts.org rank requirements.
      • A scout with any questions or concerns about meeting rank or leadership requirements should contact the Scoutmaster to get clarification.
